Observing the landscape during a total solar eclipse

Fireflies come out at midday during a total solar eclipse

While most people were looking up, interesting things were happening on the ground during the solar eclipse as well. This video (clipped here to get to the moment of totality more quickly) shows what was happening in the landscape while the sky was giving the show of the century.

As the strange light evolved toward darkness, street lamps switched on, cicadas began to sing, crickets chirped the midday twilight, and even fireflies came out.

And while the video was recording the transition of the landscape, I was photographing the transition of the sun. Below is my best photograph of the great solar eclipse of 2017.

Signed black and white fine art photographic prints are available below and also from my website here.
