Original Baryta Photographique paper has been discontinued, with pending release of an entirely new version two coming in April
Canson Infinity announced late in 2019 that they were discontinuing their popular Baryta Photographique paper, and replacing it with an entirely new version of the paper called Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique II 310.
I was curious why a paper company would make such a radical decision regarding one of their most highly-regarded and popular products, so I contacted Canson Infinity to find out the reasons behind the change.
NOTE: This blog post contains no paid product promotions. I have no business relationship with Canson Infinity except as a customer.
The reason Canson Infinity switched to Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique II
According to the Canson representative who responded to my queries, Canson recently updated its paper coating equipment so that it can now coat paper up to 60-inches (previously it only handled 50-inch paper). However, the new machine made it impossible to recreate the original surface characteristics of the original Baryta Photographique, so the company decided to launch a new product.
I’ve had a sample pack of the paper on backorder since December. The representative said the paper will be available in the US in late March or April. The order page on BH Photo and Video claims availability in mid-March.
Coming soon: Print comparison video
As soon as I receive my package of backordered paper, I’ll be posting a video where I compare prints on the new Baryta Photographique II paper with the original Baryta Photographique and with Hahnemühle Fine Art Baryta.
New matt version: Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique II Matt
Interestingly, the press release announces that Canson will also be releasing a new matt version of Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique II.
Keep your current ICC printer profiles
The representative said the new Baryta Photographique II will use the same ICC profiles as the original Baryta Photographique. The new paper has the same white point and handles better in terms of surface marking. The primary difference is a subtle difference in the surface characteristics which is now smoother with a little less texture.

“Canson® Infinity presents their new Baryta Photographique II range
The Canson® Infinity Baryta Photographique range is evolving and will be available in an updated and improved generation, as Baryta Photographique II and Baryta Photographique II Matt
Canson® Infinity is evolving their Baryta Photographique range, which will consist of the new and improved Baryta Photographique II as of January 2020 to coincide with the innovative new Baryta Photographique II Matt as of Q2 2020, while the existing Baryta Photographique paper will be discontinued.
Constantly seeking to offer the best possible quality of fine art inkjet papers, the second generation of the Baryta Photographique range has improved handling and finishing characteristics. The new range is also evolving in size and is now available in sheets and rolls up to 60” wide, making it perfect for large-scale photography projects. The new generation product has a more structured surface aspect which is reminiscent of the traditional fibre-based darkroom papers.
Baryta Photographique II will be available starting from January 2020 and in Q2 2020 Canson Infinity will also be introducing the new Baryta Photographique II Matt. Equally benefitting from improved handling and finishing characteristics, it has a smooth matt surface finish, which accentuates the detail within the image.
Providing the true look and feel of a traditional darkroom print
Baryta Photographique II and Baryta Photographique II Matt offers photographers and printers the opportunity of creating a photograph with the true look and feel of a traditional darkroom print. With excellent handling characteristics, the second generation of the Baryta Photographique II range can be used in a wide range of applications.
The Baryta Photographique II range have a true 100% barium sulphate layer (baryta) which offers exceptional contrast and detail as well as a wide colour gamut. They also have an extremely high D-Max (black point) to produce black and white images with depth and clarity and colour images with exceptional vibrancy and intensity. Both papers have a traditional photographic alphacellulose base.
ICC profiles, developed in-house by technical experts
For both fine art photo papers of the Baryta Photographique range, ICC profiles developed inhouse by technical experts using the latest state-of-the-art equipment, are available to download for free from the Canson® Infinity website.”
