Frigid morning hike leads to surprise — a rare spectacle known as frost flowers

Join me in this video as I discover — purely by accident — a rare winter phenomenon known as “frost flowers” or “frost ribbons.”

This occurs on the very first freeze of winter, when the water retained in certain types of plant stems freezes, splitting the stem, and forcing the water out into frozen curls and ribbons that resemble icy white flowers on the ground.

Melts with the rising sun

Frost flowers are exceedingly fragile and delicate. If you touch them, they shatter and melt on your finger tips. As soon as the light of sunrise hits them, this most ephemeral kind of flowers begins to disintegrate and melt away along with the frost on the grass.

Below are seven high-resolution smart phone photographs of the frost flowers I found on my hike this morning. All images are copyright of Keith Dotson (2019).
