Last week I had the opportunity to view a selection of prints by Richard Tuschman at a local university photo gallery. The exhibition includes a cross-section of images from two of Tuschman’s series, Hopper Meditations and Once Upon A Time In Kazimierz, of which the image above is a part.

Included with the exhibit is a small model room, made of paper and slightly shabby in its construction. Somehow — miraculously — Tuschman turns photographs of this small model room into an environment where characters from his Kazimierz series live and work. Tuschman photographs costumed models separately, and manipulates them into miniature model rooms and streets. He makes it work beautifully, creating atmospheric worlds and transporting the viewer into another time and place. As a series, the photographs a story, and part of the fun is imagining what’s happening to the characters from photograph to photograph.

If Tuschman’s work goes on display near you, go see it. Highly recommended!

The video below shows Tuschman working on sets and compositing the final photographs. Check it out – fascinating.
