I found this incredible specimen resting on the pavement this morning. It’s a really large moth — probably 3-4 inches long. It wasn’t moving and I planned to collect it and bring it home to make high-resolution images, but then realized it was still alive (barely), so I left it alone.
Professor Google tells me it’s a Royal Walnut Moth (Citheronia regalis). I can’t recall seeing any here before, but their habitat covers most of the Eastern US.

Wow! What a beauty!!! We have a large moth like that here, but gray coloring, the Carpenter-worm moth.
