In this video, we document our second visit to the incredible, historic city of Wheeling, West Virginia.
My first visit to Wheeling was an impromptu stop on my way to someplace else so I only had a few hours there in only one neighborhood, but I made so many photographs that I knew I had to come back and see more of the city.
What I found on my second visit was a beautiful old city that once flourished with abundant industry, vigorous immigrant labor, westward travel of Americans on the National Road, and riverboat traffic on the Ohio River.
What’s so special about Wheeling?
In Wheeling, you don’t just see a few historic neighborhoods . . . you see neighborhood after neighborhood of historic homes and antique commercial buildings. The entire city is a historic neighborhood built in the era of American growth and confidence.
Perhaps well past its prime now, the golden luster of past glories can still be found, and in the shadows are gritty examples of derelict buildings that make perfect fodder for my lens.
This video documents my second visit to Wheeling, where I spent several says walking the streets of various parts of the city. I made hundreds of photographs and saw so much wonderful, historic architecture, I could never show it all.
Correction: In the last section of the video, I incorrectly said that Teena crossed the bridge to the State of Ohio, but in reality she walked to Wheeling Island, which lies in the river near the State of Ohio.
