Historic photographs of great cities by Detroit Publishing Co., accessed from the Library of Congress
These beautiful images are in the public domain, which means they’ve aged out of copyright, and are available for download from sources like the Library of Congress. I’ve individually selected images from some of my favorite cities, including Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans.
Most of the photographs were made by the famous Detroit Publishing Co., which created a remarkable photographic record of 25,000 glass negatives of mostly US cities in the years between 1890 and 1924. After bankruptcy, the negatives were transferred to several entities before landing at the Library of Congress.
