Explore an abandoned and derelict old storefront with fine art photographer Keith Dotson
In this video, we photograph this abandoned and derelict old storefront in Clarksdale, Mississippi. One of the things I love about Clarksdale and surrounding communities is that there are still so many of these touchstones with the past all around. I mean look at this place — it’s a direct line to the early 1900s. This town is a rich source of visual inspiration for someone like me.
That faded old sign has at least three layers of signs coming through — and they all say something different.
This ironwork column was made by Chickasaw Iron Works out of Memphis. I’m fascinated by these ironworks companies like Chickasaw and I’m planning to make a separate video just about them. From about the 1880s until the 1920s, they really shaped the look of American Main Streets with these iron storefronts, which you could order by mail and have delivered to your construction site.
