Looking at an Antique Portrait of a Group of Brothers and Sisters (Maybe 1880s?)

In this video, we examine a whole-plate tintype portrait of a group of young people who look like family

This rare whole-plate tintype shows a well-dressed but rather stern-looking group of brothers and sisters.

Common sizes of antique tintype plates

There can be a lot of variation in the sizes of old tintypes — sometimes they even appear to have been cut irregularly with a pair of tin shears — but below is a list of common sizes for old tintype plates.

  • Whole-plate (6½” × 8½”)
  • Half-plate (4½” × 5½”)
  • Quarter-plate (about 3¼” × 4¼”)
  • Sixth-plate (2½” × 3½”)
  • Ninth-plate (2″ × 2½”)
  • Gem tintypes (1½” × 1½” or smaller)
